Instructional Level:

The instructional level of the program is advanced.  According to the definition of the APTA:  This level assumes thorough familiarity with the topic and focuses on advanced techniques, recent advances, and future directions.

 Educational Credit:            

The credentialing committee of the New York Society for Continuing Education in Physical Therapy ( NYSCEPT)has awarded this program 3.6 CEUs.  Evaluation may vary from state to state.


  Certification:
         Certification is received upon successful completion of post-course test.

After completing the initial and the advanced course, the participants will take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination. (ICLM Examination).  Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will become ICLM Certified.

 

  Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:
  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer & lymphedema.
  3. Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-layered bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
  4. Understanding of the use of compression devices.
  5. Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care etc.)
  6. Ability to evaluate patients suffering from lymphedema or edema, and to design and document comprehensive treatments.
  7. Ability to treat various pathologies showing symptoms of edema or lymphedema using the techniques of lymphedema management.
  8. Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  9. Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.
  10. Understanding of the most recent research performed in the field of treatment of lymphedema.

A group of rooms is held at the Stanford Guest House 2575 Sand Hill Road Menlo Park, CA 94025-7015 at the rate of $85.00 + tax.  Cut -off date: 5/12/08.  After this date, reservations will be accepted on a space and rate availability basis.   • 8:00 - 10:15am: Presentation. Orientation. Review of  anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.  Topographic structure of the lymph vessels system.  Anatomy of the lymphatic systems of the limbs & trunk. Video. Lymph formation, lymph propulsion. 
  • 10:30 - 12:00noon: Manual lymph drainage: theory, research. Direction of lymph drainage.  Compression therapy (compression devices) Theory.  Recent research. 
  • 1:00 - 2:30pm: Lymphedema: Definition.  Differential diagnosis.  Lymphatic system imaging. Primary and secondary lymphedema.
  • 2:30 - 3:30pm: Surgical Management of Breast Cancer presented by a Medical Doctor of Stanford University Hospital (To be Announced)
  • 3:30 - 3:45pm: Q & A.

  • 10:30 - 12:00noon: Bandaging: theory (review).  Research.  Laplace Law.
  • 1:00 - 4:00 pmPractice: Bandaging of U.E. & L.E.  Bandaging of the face. Theory: Manual lymph drainage & bandaging of genital area lymphedema.   Problem solving.
  • Recent reserach results.  Ongoing research performed at the University of Brussels.
  • 4:00-5:00pm: Questions.  Case studies.

   Sunday, June 8.

  • 8:00am-10:15am: Lymphedema & liposuction surgery: pre and post-operative rehab. care.              Breast reconstruction.  Implications in rehab.  
  • 10:30 - 12:00noon: Concomitant Venous Obstruction in Patients with Secondary Lymphedema.   Venous insufficiency   
  • 1:00 - 4:45pm: Practice: Treatment of U.E..  Lymphedema post mastectomy.  Treatment of L.E. Lymphedema post prostate cancer surgery. Problem solving.
  • 5:00 pm-6:30 pm: Compressions devices, bandages, compressions garments: Presentation by specialists.

  Monday, June 9.

  • 8:00am- 10:15am: Cancer rehabilitation.  Epidemiology. 
  • 10:30 - 12:00noon:   Cancer risk factors.  Cancer treatment: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy.  Physical treatment of the consequences of radiotherapy  treatment.  Psychological issues.                                            Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1.
  • 1:00 - 2-30pm: lymphedema in pediatrics.  Case studies.  Treatment.
  • 2:30 - 3:30 pm:  Case studies.  Review.
  • 3:30 - 5:00pm: International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination.    

 

  Note:  For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts or bathing suits.

    Conference Fees:   

    Early Registration: $850.00 (Until 03/31/2008)

   Regular Registration: $900.00 (Until 04/30/2008)
   
    Late Registration: $950.00 ( After 04/30/2008)

Fee includes: tuition, pre-course material, course handout, and lunch ticket.

Cancellations and requests for refund will be accepted until June 6, 2008 minus a $300.00 administrative fee.

There are three ways to register through the Registration page:
 
1. Online registration:   entails filling out the electronic form contained in the Registration page.  This method guarantees receipt of your information within 12 hours, however, a check or money order will still have to be received in order to complete your registration.

2. The second way to register for the course is by printing the manual fill-out form page, filling out the information requested on it and mailing it with a check or money order enclosed. 

3. This third alternative is meant for use if you are experiencing problems in registering through the other two methods,  we will be happy to accept your information in the form of a note (typed or clearly written) sent in with your payment. In order to register you we need the following information:
Your Name, Home Address, your Phone and Fax numbers, your Facility's Address, its Phone and Fax number. Your title: PT, OTR...and License number.

Cancellation & Refund policy.

Cancellations and requests for refund will be accepted until October 18, 2007 minus a $300.00 administrative fee.

Any notification of withdrawal or cancellation and any request for refund must be done in writing.

Payment of refunds is to be made within 30 days of determination of student withdrawal.

To satisfy the requirements of B.P.P.V.E. we must give you 2 examples:

Example 1: if you decide to cancel your registration on October 18, 2007 you would have to notify the school in writing.  Your request for refund would be applicable immediately.  Payment of refund would be made prior to November 18, 2007

Example 2: If you decide to cancel your application one month prior to the beginning of the course, you would have to notify the school in writing.  Your request for refund would be in effect immediately.  Payment of the refund would be made within 30 days of determination of your withdrawal.

 

Statement

The registration form is legally binding when signed by student and accepted by institution.

We do not participate in the Student Recovery Unit.
