Instructional Level:

The instructional level of the program is Intermediate according to the definition of APTA. The level of this program assumes that participants have general familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on increasing understanding and application.  Applicants will acquire general familiarity with the topic by reading the pre-course material sent upon confirmation of registration.


  Certification:
         Certification level 1 is received upon successful completion of the post-course tests.

After completing the initial and the advanced course, the participants will take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination (ICLM Examination).  Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will become ICLM Certified.

  Educational Credit:

Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists will be awarded about 5 CEUs; evaluation may vary from State to State.

The credentialing committee of the New York Society of Continuing Education in Physical Therapy has awarded this program 4.68 CEUs.  The Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy granted approval for 52 Credits (GEN).  Approval number: PTCE000377.

  Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:
  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-layered bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
  3. Understanding of the use of compression devices.
  4. Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care, compression garment management, home program, lifestyle). 
  5. Ability to evaluate patients suffering from edema or lymphedema and to design and document comprehensive treatments.
  6. Ability to differentiate Chronic Venous Insufficiency from Lymphedema and Lipedema.
  7. Ability to treat patients suffering from lymphedema and venous edema.
  8. Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  9. Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.

  • 8:00-10:30am: Presentation and orientation.  Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.                Test 1: Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.          Theoretical approach of manual lymph drainage, multi-layered bandaging and compression device treatment.  Research.
  • 10:45-12:00 noon: Progress in Lymphatic Research by Stanley G. Rockson, M.D.
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Lab:  Manual lymph drainage applied to the lower extremity (L.E.).
  • 3:15-5:00pm: Lab: Manual lymph drainage applied to the upper extremity. (U.E.).
  • 5:00-6:00pm: Pathophysiology.

  Monday, September 20.

  • 8:00-10:30am.  Test 2: Theoretical approach to physical treatment of lymphedema.  Research.  Review test 1 .  Q & A.
  • Evaluation and treatment of the L.E. lymphedema.: inspection, measurements, palpation, precautions, skin care and diet (Research), manual lymph drainage lab.  Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by L.E. lymphedema.  Documentation.  Medicare requirements.  Coding .  Data analysis.  Measurement for stockings.  Stocking fitting.
  • 10:45-12:00noon: Lab: manual lymph drainage.  Practice on L.E.
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Multi-layered bandaging.  Practice on L.E..
  • 3:15 - 5:00pm: Treatment of U.E. lymphedema.  Management of post-mastectomy lymphedema: assessment, precautions, skin care, manual lymph drainage lab.  Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by U.E. lymphedema.  Measurement techniques.  Measurement for sleeves.  Sleeve fitting.
  • 5:00-6:00pm: Pathophysiology.

   Tuesday, September 21.

  • 8:00- 10:30am: Test 3: Physical treatment of lymphedema (cont'ed).  Review of test 2. Q & A.   Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to L.E.
  • 10:45- 12:00noon: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging applied to the  lower extremity.  Exercises.
  • 1:00-3:00:: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging applied to the  upper extremity and trunk.  Exercises.
  • 3:15-4:00:  Review: L.E. & U.E. manual lymph drainage.  Protocol.
  • 4:00-5:00pm: Questions.  Problem solving.  theory: genital lymphedema.  Breast lymphedema.  Lymphedema management applied to pediatrics.  Case studies.

Wednesday, September 22.

  • 8:00-10:30am:.  Review of test 3.  
    Q & A.                                                  Venous edema: Pathophysiology and physical treatment.  Manual techniques.  Exercises.  Precautions.  Life style.  Compression garments addressing the needs of venous insufficiency.  Case studies.
  • 10:45-12:00noon: Lab: manual lymph drainage addressing facial lymphedema.
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Case study: U.E. manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging lab. .                        .
  • 3:15-4:00pm: Review: Upper extremity and lower extremity multi-layered bandaging: Treatment protocol.
  • 4:00-5:00pm: Presentation of compression devices by specialists.  
    Reimbursement issues.

 

  Note:  For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts, tank top or bathing suit.

Cancellations and requests for refund will be accepted until September 19, 2010 minus a $300.00 administrative fee.

There are three ways to register through the Registration page:
 
1. Online registration:   entails filling out the electronic form contained in the Registration page.  This method guarantees receipt of your information within 12 hours, however, a check or money order will still have to be received in order to complete your registration.

2. The second way to register for the course is by printing the manual fill-out form page, filling out the information requested on it and mailing it with a check or money order enclosed. 

3. The third alternative is meant for use if you are experiencing problems in registering through the other two methods,  we will be happy to accept your information in the form of a note (typed or clearly written) sent in with your payment. In order to register you we need the following information:
