Instructional Level:

The instructional level of the program is Intermediate according to the definition of APTA. The level of this program assumes that participants have general familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on increasing understanding and application.  Applicants will acquire general familiarity with the topic by reading the pre-course material sent upon confirmation of registration.


  Certification:
         Certification level 1 is received upon successful completion of the post-course tests.

After completing the initial and the advanced course, the participants will take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination (ICLM Examination).  Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will become ICLM Certified.

 

  Educational Credit:

This program has been approved for 45 contact hours, 4.5 CEUs by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA#11-493)
    

  Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate:
  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. The ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-layered bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
  3. Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care etc.) 
  4. Understanding of the use of compression devices.
  5. The ability to evaluate patients suffering from edema or lymphedema and to design and document comprehensive treatments.
  6. The ability to treat patients suffering from lymphedema and venous edema.
  7. The ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  8. The ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.

 Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

  • 8:00-10:30am: Presentation and orientation;  Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.                                   Test 1: Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. Theoretical approach to manual lymph drainage, multi-layered bandaging and compression device treatment.  Research. 
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to the lower extremity (L.E.)
  • 3:15-4:30pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to the upper extremity (U.E.)
  • 4:30-6:00pm: Pathophysiology.

  Wednesday, April 25.

  • 8:00-10:30am: Test 2: Theoretical approach to physical treatment of lymphedema.  Research.  Review test 1      Q & A.                                             Evaluation and treatment of the L.E. lymphedema: inspection, measurements, palpation, precautions, skin care, diet (research), manual lymph drainage lab. Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by L.E. lymphedema.  Documentation.  Medicare requirements.  Coding.  Data analysis.  Measurements for stockings.  Stocking fitting.
  • 10:45-12:00noon: Lab: manual lymph drainage practice on L.E.
  • 1:00-3:00pm: multi-layered bandaging: practice on L.E.
  • 3:15-5:00pm: Treatment of U.E. lymphedema.  Post-mastectomy lymphedema management.: assessment, precautions, skin care, diet, manual lymph drainage lab.  Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by U.E. lymphedema.  Documentation.  Coding.  Measurement techniques for sleeves.  Sleeve fitting.
  • 5:00-6:00pm: Pathophysiology.  Q & A.

   Thursday, April 26.

  • 8:00-10:30am: Test 3: Physical treatment of lymphedema (cont'ed) .  Review test 2.  Q& A. Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to L.E.
  • 10:45-12:00noon: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging of the L.E..  Exercises. 
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging of the U.E. and trunk.  Exercises.
  • 3:15-4:00pm: Review: L.E. & U.E. manual lymph drainage.  Protocol.
  • 4:00-5:00pm: Questions .  Problem solving. Theory: Genital lymphedema.  Breast lymphedema. Lymphedema management: application to pediatrics.  Case studies.

   Friday, April 27.

  • 8:00-9:30am: Test 3: review.  Q & A Venous edema: pathophysiology & physical treatment.  Manual techniques.  Exercises.  Precautions.  Life style.  Compression garments addressing the needs of venous insufficiency.  Case study.
  • 9:30-10:30am Progress in Lymphatic Research.  Stanley G. Rockson, M.D.
  • 10:45-12:00noon: Head and neck lymphedema.  Lab: manual lymph drainage addressing facial lymphedema.
  • 1:00-3:00pm: Case study U.E. Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-layered bandaging.
  • 3:15-4:00pm: Review: U.E. and L.E. multi-layered bandaging.
  • Review: Protocol of treatment.
  • 4:00-5:00pm: Presentation of compression devices and compression garments by specialists.  Reimbursement issues.

Note: For lab. practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing such as shorts, tank tops or bathing suits.

Fee includes: tuition, course handout and bandaging kit.

Cancellations and requests for refund will be accepted until April 24, 2012 minus a $300.00 administrative fee.

Register prior to January 21, 2012 and benefit from a $100.00 discount.

There are three ways to register through the Registration page:

2. The second way to register for the course is by printing the manual fill-out form page, filling out the information requested on it and mailing it with a check or money order enclosed. 

3. The third alternative is meant for use if you are experiencing problems in registering through the other two methods,  we will be happy to accept your information in the form of a note (typed or clearly written) sent in with your payment.
