  Instructional Level:

         The instructional level of the program is advanced.  According to the definition of the APTA:  This level assumes thorough familiarity with the topic and focuses on advanced techniques, recent advances, and future directions.

  Course Objectives:

         At the end of this course, participants will confirm their:

  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer & lymphedema.
  3. The ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) as described in  Leduc Method.
  4. The ability to perform multilayered bandaging.
  5. Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care etc.) and use of compression devices.
  6. The ability to evaluate an edema patient and to design a comprehensive treatment.
  7. The ability to treat various pathologies using the techniques of lymphedema treatment.
  8. The ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  9. The ability to recognize when the intervention of the lymphologist is necessary.

    Conference Fees:

  Thursday, June 20.

  • 8:00a.m.-4:30 p.m. Pre-course test. Review of  anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.  Topographic structure of the lymph vessels system.  Anatomy of the lymphatic system s of the limbs & trunk.  Slides Video.  Discussion of Sappey's theory. Reabsorption, lymph propulsion, video: contraction of lymphangions. Theory of manual lymph drainage.  Research (review). 
  • Practice.  Manual lymph drainage.  Treatment of edema 2 ary to hand surgery.
  • Theory of pressotherapy (compression devices).  Research.  Pressotherapy & electrostimulation.  Historical review.
  • Anastomosis.  Substitution pathways.  Dissections. 
  • Practice: Manual lymph drainage: call up & reabsorption techniques: a) after axillar nodes dissection.  b) after inguinal nodes dissection.
  • Venous insufficiency.

  Friday, June 21.

  • 8:00 a.m-4:30 p.m. Anatomy of the lymphatics of the face.  Substitution pathways.  
  • Practice: manual lymph drainage of the face.
  • Bandaging: theory (review).  Research.  Laplace Law.
  • Practice: Bandaging of U.E. & L.E.  Demonstration of bandaging of the face.
  • Theory: Manual lymph drainage & bandaging of genital area lymphedema.  Slides.   Problem solving.

   Saturday, June 22.

  • 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Lymphatic system imaging.  Scintigraphy & plethysmography.   Lymphedema & surgery.  Axillary vein after breast cancer surgery.   Research.  Anatomy & Manual lymph drainage of the anterior aspect of the thorax.
  • Practice: Treatment of U.E..  Lymphedema post mastectomy.  Problem solving.   Questions & answers.
  • 5: 00p.m.-7:00p.m. Compressions devices, bandages, compressions garments: Presentation by specialists.

  Sunday, June 23.

  • 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy & Oncology:   Breast cancer surgery. video.  Epidemiology, risk factors, classification, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy.  Psychological issues.  Breast reconstruction.  Physical treatment of the consequences of radiotherapeutic treatment.
  • Treatment of edema in:
  1. reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
  2. hemiplegia & spinal cord injury.
  3. Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome.
  4. burns.
  • Residual scar edema post mastectomy.  Primary lymphedema.  Capillary permeability. L.P.G. techniques in edema treatment?  Skin care.  Problem solving.  Questions & answers.       

 

  Note:  Participants should bring appropriate clothing for lab practice, such as shorts.

Regular registration will be accepted until:  August 21, 2000
Cancellations and requests for refunds will be accepted until
August 10, 2000 and will involve an $80 administrative fee.
